Klassen Corporation was commissioned to design and build a new activity and support facility for the District. The 20,802 square foot building includes a gymnasium, weight room, activity room, preschool, lobby and four bowling lanes available for public rental. The project also included the installation of a 80kW solar Rooftop System, including electrical infrastructure, PV panels, combiner boxes, inverters and tie-into building electrical infrastructure. This system qualified the District for PG&E’s California Solar Initiative Program which awarded them a rebate of over $80,000.

The new facility is significant for the community of Taft as it fills a hole left in the heart of the city when their recreation center was lost to fire in 2007. It is estimated that nearly 90% of area families within a 407 square mile radius utilize the programs and services offered by the West Side Recreation and Park District. The 1,700 s.f. weight room was constructed with free weights, kettle balls, dumb bells, recumbent bikes, treadmills, elliptical machines, curl bars/weights, chest press, extreme runners, extreme jump, ab rollers, leg press and more. The Gymnasium is the home to many activities and is available for drop-in use seven-days per week. Activities/Programs include Open Gym, Ping-Pong, Indoor Hockey, Indoor Soccer,Indoor Football, Indoor Walking Track, Basketball, Volleyball, Dodgeball, Batting Cage, Badminton, Ultimate Frisbee and Midnight Gym. The Recreation Center also includes a Bowling Alley with four lanes. Residents enjoy Open Bowling, Fun Friday Bowling, Glow (cosmic) Bowl, Party Rentals and Leagues.
